Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Clear your mind of all thoughts. Focus on a candle flame, thinking of nothing but the flicker for a minute or two. You could also try closing your eyes and imagining that each thought is being carried away in a bubble or balloon. Capture each thought and watch them float up and away.
Step2
Use positive guided imagery to redirect your thoughts and calm your overwhelmed senses. Use guided imagery to transport your thoughts to a happier time and place. Use guided imagery audio recordings if you don't know how to do it yourself. Most new age stores carry them.
Step3
Talk through the situation with your friends, family or a counselor. Talking out loud may be one of the best ways to help the image to eventually dissipate. Sharing the picture with others can help your body's natural coping mechanisms kick in.
Step4
Decribe the shocking image in detail in a journal. Note where it took place, who was there and how it makes you feel. Even though you are not sharing the experience with someone else, the act of "telling" your story, even if it is just a diary for yourself, may help you deal with image.
