Your Social Security number is necessary for you to work legally in the United States. You also need it to receive Social Security benefits, and it may be required by many financial institutions. Your Social Security card has the number printed on it and should be with you at all times.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Fill out a government form SS-5, which is an Application For a Social Security Card. Download a printable version of this form from the Social Security Administration website. Get a list of acceptable documents you can use to prove your age and your identity on the site.
Step2
Provide documents or certified copies that prove immigration status or United States citizenship. You must also prove that you're allowed to work in the United States when you're legally in the United States temporarily.
Step3
Show your birth certificate or your passport to prove how old you are. You can show a photo identification like your passport, your driver's license or non-driver's ID card to prove your identity.
Step4
Mail the documents or take them in to a Social Security office. Locate your nearest office online.
Step5
Receive your Social Security number and card in the mail once your documents are verified.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get the correct type of Social Security card. There are three different kinds, and the one you need depends on your citizenship and work status. Go to the Social Security Administration website for an explanation of the differences between these cards.
