When working properly, a spinning reel allows you to make long casts with smaller lures. When it tangles you can spend a long time undoing it. Learn how to keep a spinning reel line trouble free and make your fishing trip more enjoyable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Select the proper line for your spinning reel. It should be limp and able to cast easily. The line should fit in the pound-test guidelines on the spinning reel.
Step2
Keep the line tight on the spool. Place the line on the floor with the label facing upwards. Open the bail and run the line through the guides and onto the spool, securing it tightly.
Step3
Wind the line on the reel. Hold it between your fingers as you turn your spinning reel. Watch for twisting on the line.
Step4
Maintain pressure on the fishing line when turning the spinning reel. Fill the reel until it is within a 1/4-inch from the top. If it's overfilled, looping can occur.
Step5
Place fingers in front of the spinning reel to keep the tension on the line when you cast. When the lure puts weight on the fishing line, you can release it and reel normally.
Step6
Attach a swivel to the fishing line when using worms, inline spinners and spoons. These lures cause your spinning reel line to twist. A swivel will prevent this from occurring.
