Things You'll Need:
- Curry comb
- Dandy brush
- Body brush
- Hoof pick
- Towel
-
Step 1
Use a curry comb made from rubber rather than metal. Use small circular motions to loosen dirt and sweat so that it is easier to remove later.
-
Step 2
Flick the horse's coat, using a dandy brush. The proper technique for dandy brushing is flipping the brush up and outward as you do when you sweep a floor. This motion will unleash a plume of dust with each stroke. If you don't see dust, add more flick to your wrist.
-
Step 3
Smooth the coat and brush away the dirt and sweat with a body brush. Brush the horse all over and take your time. This is the part of the process most horses enjoy.
-
Step 4
Gently lift each foot and inspect the hooves carefully. If needed, use the hoof pick to remove debris and clean the hoof.
-
Step 5
Buff your horse with a clean, dry cloth to shine the coat and smooth the hair.
