How to Keep a Hamster Happy

Hamsters are great pets for children who are learning to take care of animals. They are easy to care for and it doesn't take much to keep them content. Your children can keep their hamster happy by attending to a few simple needs.

      Clean the cage once a week. Wipe out the cage with a damp cloth and add fresh, clean cedar chips every week.

      Give your hamster fresh food and water daily. Throw out the old food and water before each new feeding.

    • 3

      Talk to you hamster every day. Even though they will not answer, they do love the attention. You may even try to pet the hamster slightly on the head. Grabbing your hamster may hurt or scare him.

    • 4

      Offer him some fresh carrots, broccoli, apples, or other fruits and vegetables every day. Just a few small pieces as a snack will make him happy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not add another hamster unless your hamster is used to being around others hamsters.

  • Do not overfeed your hamster. Some hamsters will eat everything they are given and this could cause the hamsters to become sick and unhappy.
