Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Follow the vet's instructions or limitations to the letter. Do not vary from the assigned distance and duration the horse can walk.
Step2
Observe the horse in her stall before beginning a hand walk. Assist the recovery on the animal's timetable. Notice if the horse indicates pain. Pay attention to the horse's demeanor. If she is withdrawn and quiet, this may be a sign she is simply not ready to get out of her stall for an extended period.
Step3
Pick a good location for the hand walk. The path should be flat and free of any distractions that could scare the horse.
Step4
Start the walk slowly and let the horse dictate the pace. After a few weeks, the horse may be healthy enough for you to push her limits. However, if you push the horse too fast too soon you can make the injury worse.
Step5
Study the horse after the hand walk and see if there is a noticeable limp or change in demeanor. If there is any change, call the veterinarian immediately.
