1
Purchase the correct hammer. Use a hammer with a waffle face that won't slip when you pound big nails.
-
2
Get the proper weight. If you use a hammer that you can barely lift, you won't have the strength to drive in the nail. If the hammer is too light, it won't deliver the necessary impact.

3
Hold the nail near the top. Keep your eye on the big nail while you swing the hammer. The hammer will land in the spot you are looking at.
-
4
Grab the hammer near the end of the handle. Swing it smoothly and easily to strike the nail. Hit it squarely with a lot of force.
-
5
Make the last blow count. Bend at the elbow and allow the hammer's weight to drive in the nail. If done correctly it should take no more than three blows to hammer in a big nail.

The striking face of the hammer should remain parallel to the head of the big nail.
Avoid hammering the big nails sideways or with glancing blows. This can break the nail or mark the wood.
