How to Grow Stronger Sunflowers

Sunflowers are a popular addition to landscaping because they are hearty, grow big and strong with very little care and provide food for the birds and wildlife. Given the right growing conditions, sunflowers are perennials that return every year.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Choose a spot in your yard that gets mostly sun, and only a little shade. Sunflowers got their name because the flower head follows the sun.
Step2
Plant sunflowers along a fence, wall, side of your house or an outbuilding to protect them from the strong winds and rain. The stems of the sunflowers grow stronger if there is some type of weather protection.
Step3
Sow the sunflower seeds directly in the ground after the last threat of frost has passed. Sunflowers cannot survive freezing temperatures.
Step4
Compost the soil in which you are growing the sunflowers to ensure they get all the nutrients that are needed for strong growth.
Step5
Water your sunflowers regularly, especially during dry periods. Water the plants at the base, and then sprinkle some water directly onto the flower heads.
Step6
Stake the stems of the plant after the flowers form and start to fill out. Even if the stems are strong, the weight of a large flower is usually too much for the stem to support on its own. Use small branches, garden stakes or pieces of metal fencing. Place one next to each flower and tie it loosely to the stem with rope or twine.
