A healthy ferret's coat should be soft and shiny. To maintain an attractive coat, you should pay attention to your pet's diet, control its environment to some degree and also regularly perform basic grooming. A visit to a professional also will help.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Feed your ferret a high protein diet with a high fat content to keep her coat healthy. A ferret requires several small meals a day and it is advisable to allow her access to food and water 24 hours a day.

  2. Step 2

Consider adding an oil-based fatty acid supplement to his diet. Your ferret will likely enjoy the taste, so give him a few drops daily as a treat to keep his hair healthy.

  3. Step 3

Use a cold air humidifier in the winter when the heat is on and the air inside your home is warm and dry. This will keep your ferret's hair and skin moisturized and in better condition.

  4. Step 4

Bathe and brush your ferret to keep his hair healthy. A bath once a month and brushing your pet twice a week will remove dead hair.

  5. Step 5

Take your ferret to the vet for yearly checkups or whenever you notice anything out of the ordinary. Various diseases can cause a ferret's hair to become dry and brittle or even fall out. Since a ferret seldom displays symptoms, a regularly scheduled checkup is a wise precaution.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid bathing your ferret more often than once a month to keep her skin from drying and her hair from losing too many natural oils.
  • Excessive hair loss can be a sign of serious illness so consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your ferret's shedding.
