How to Dog Proof the Cat Litter Using the Plastic Tub Method

Sometimes it can be hard to find a place to put the cat litter box so the dog can't get to it. Some dogs and puppies like to eat cat litter or cat waste. Others like to play with it and drag it around your house. Either way, it's a habit you want to restrict.

Things You'll Need:

• Plastic tub
• Tape measure
• Magic marker
• Knife

1. Purchase a large plastic tub with a removable lid that fits securely. The tub needs to be large enough for the litter box to fit in the bottom. 30 to 50 gallon is usually a good size.

2. Place the litter box inside the tub and fill the litter box as you normally would.

3. Measure the width of your cat at his belly. This is usually the widest part.

4. Take the lid of the tub and use a magic marker to draw a square where you want to put your door. Measure to make sure the door is wide enough before you cut.

5. Use a sharp knife to cut the door out of the top of the box. Put the lid securely on top of the tub.

Tips & Warnings

• If your cat is older, you might want to put the door on the side of the tub instead of the top, to make it easier for her to get in and out.
• If you dog is not larger than your cat, then the door on the side of the tub will not deter the dog from getting into the box.
• When a dog eats things that he shouldn't, it is often a sign that something is lacking in his diet. Talk to your vet about the problem.
