Step 1
Keep your dog on a leash around cats until you can control the chasing when he's free.
-
Step 2
Take your leashed dog into a room with a cat present. Be sure there is an escape path for the cat in case you loose control of the dog.
-
Step 3
Say "No" in a sharp voice whenever the dog starts to move towards the cat or displays body language that tells you he is preparing to chase. If your dog already knows the commands "Off" or "Stay," you can say them after you say "No." Repeat this exercise until you feel confident that your dog won't chase the cat.
-
Step 4
Repeat Step 3. This time leave the leash on the dog but do not hold the other end. Let the dog drag the leash so you can grab it quickly if you need to. Have a second person in the room, ready to rescue the cat, when you progress to this step.
