How to Color With Two Highlighters and a Red Pen

Some artists create art with mainstream mediums, such as paint and clay, but others choose to unconventionally blend mediums and styles. Using colored highlighters with a red pen is one way to mix mediums and styles when coloring.

Instructions

1. Decide which areas of your artwork will be colored with each highlighter. Certain highlighter colors look dark and grayish if layered over one another.

2. Avoid mistakes by taking your time and coloring carefully. Highlighter colors and red ink are all bold, vibrant colors. This makes your artwork eyecatching, but it also makes it nearly impossible to conceal any mistakes.

3. Color with the two highlighters first. Highlighter ink loses some of its vivid brightness if you layer it over red ink.

4. Let the highlighter ink dry before applying red ink. This prevents any smudging or bleeding that could occur if the highlighter ink is still wet or damp when you color over it.

5. Add the red pen as the last step of your project to achieve the greatest contrast with the colors of the highlighters. Use the red to outline areas of your picture and add detail to the areas already colored with the highlighters.
