How to Fit in at a New School

Starting at a new school is stressful and frightening for even the most confident people. But it is important to remind yourself that everything new is scary and takes adjustment. You are going to feel like you fit in at school in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the school ahead of time. Go when school is in session so teachers and students are present. Size up the situation, notice the way the kids dress and act.

    • 2

Dress in clothes that you like the first day of school. However, if your style is extreme, you might want to tone it down until you are more confident that you fit in.

    • 3

Smile and say hello to everyone you see. Introduce yourself when you sit down next to someone in class. Do not rule out any particular group of students based on their appearance.

    • 4

Look for your niche. Keep your eye open for people that remind you of your friends from your old school. Approach these people and introduce yourself. Ask them if you can join them for lunch.

    • 5

Act confident, but do not act conceited or cocky. Do not be shy.

    • 6

Join a club or try out for a team. This provides the opportunity to get to know people that have similar interests as you.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is not a good idea to make comparisons between the new school and the old school. It is hard to make friends if you are constantly bragging about your old school.
