Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start with menstrual pads. Most teenagers start their first periods with a menstrual pad put into the underwear to catch the menstrual flow. These are easy to use, designed now to be comfortable, and most come with wings with prevent spotting on clothes. Unfortunately, they can also be messier than other options. If you're concerned about the environmental impact of these, you can purchase reusable menstrual pads to clean.
Step2
Think about tampons. Inserted into the vagina, tampons catch the menstrual flow. Tampons are by the far the most popular hygiene product, as they are cleaner and can't be felt once properly inserted. They're also more easily worn during workouts or when swimming. However, they can cause a serious, but rare condition called Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). In addition, if you're not comfortable with your body or touching your body, you may not be comfortable inserting a tampon.
Step3
Consider alternative hygiene products, such as the Mooncup or the Keeper. The Mooncup or Keeper is a reusable, small plastic cup inserted into the vagina to catch the menstrual flow. These are better for the environment and worn for longer times than tampons. However, some people find them uncomfortable to place and disgusting to clean.
