Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go in person to greet them as soon as possible if they are arriving from another destination. Meeting someone at the airport after a long flight or in the hotel lobby will save them from having to get to your house or meeting place by themselves and show yourself as a considerate host.

  2. Step 2

Make eye contact and smile at the person in a friendly manner. Regardless of the formality of the situation or the stature of the person, a direct approach and a warm smile will set the precedent and encourage them to smile back at you.

  3. Step 3

Identify yourself if you have never met before. Say the person's name to attract attention and then your own name and position if you acting on behalf of an employer, so they know exactly who you are. This is also a good time to offer a few words of welcome to your town or country.

  4. Step 4

Shake hands in a formal situation or hug if you have a close relationship with them. Physical greetings are something that vary immensely all over the world, as many Europeans will give a kiss on either cheek or a Japanese person may maintain a distance, but give a small bow to show respect. Research this in advance for different cultural etiquette if your guest is an international visitor.

  5. Step 5

Inform your guest where you are taking them or the agenda for the day. This is especially important for business guests so they can plan their own time appropriately and know what to bring. Offer to help them with any luggage they have, and check that the agenda is suitable for them.
