How to Formally Address British Royalty and Aristocracy in Person

Knowing the appropriate manner in which to address British royalty will help you feel at ease when the occasion arises. Properly addressing members of Royalty shows respect for the title, as well as the person who holds it.

Instructions

    • 1

Address the king or queen in British royalty as "Your Majesty." Acknowledge the introductions, and do not speak until spoken to.

    • 2

Speak to a prince or princess as "Your Royal Highness." In British royalty, the crown prince is known as the Prince of Wales.

    • 3

Add the title of "duke" or "duchess" to the last name of those who carry the title. You can also address them as "Your Grace."

    • 4

Call a Marquess and Marchioness a "lord" and "lady," respectively, followed by their last name. For example, Lord Smith or Lady Johnson. Earls, Counts, Viscounts and Barons are also addressed in this manner, using the appropriate gender-specific title.

    • 5

Distinguish a baronet by placing "Sir" before his full name, such as Sir Michael Smith. His wife would be Lady Smith. Knights are addressed in the same manner.
