How to Install Drivers for the HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OS X

Save

For some reason, HP randomly comes out with products that are not supported in the Mac OS environment, although most of their products are Mac-compatible. If you missed the small print on the box and bought yourself a HP LaserJet 1020, you have probably discovered by now that this is one such product. Fortunately, there is a way to install drivers for the HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OS X.

  • Download the LaserJet 1022 drivers from the NARC website (see resources).

  • Browse to the folder /Library/Receipts to see if there are any files pertaining to the HP 1020 or HP 1022. Delete them if you find some.

  • Go to the Printer Setup Utility. Again, delete anything for the HP 1020 or HP 1022 in this area.

  • Double-click on the icon for the file you downloaded in Step 1 to install the printer drivers on your Mac.

  • Browse to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet. Delete everything except the 1020 subfolder. Move that folder to the desktop and double-click on it. You should have two finder windows open now, the /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet folder that you just deleted/moved everything from, and the desktop/1020 folder. In the second folder, command-A to select all items, and drag the items onto the window of the /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet folder.

  • Restart your computer. Make sure your USB cord is connected from your Mac to your LaserJet 1020.

  • Open the Printer Setup Utility once again.

  • Click the "Add New Printer" button.

  • Select HP LaserJet 1020 from the list that pops up, and click the "Add" button. This should add the HP LaserJet 1020 to your list of available printers in all of your Mac OS X applications.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you download the OLD LaserJet 1022 drivers, available on the NARC site. Do not download the drivers directly from HP, as these have since been updated and will no longer work with this process. The ones you want are the ones that were published prior to April 2006.
