Being an individual is something that many people take for granted. Too often, people conform to the roles of society or their social group and forget to express themselves as a unique person independent of the group. Expressing your individuality is an essential part to personal growth and a great way to exert personal power. Learn to express individuality and reclaim your unique birthright to be who you are.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start by realizing your intrinsic individuality as a human being. Write down qualities you have that are inherent to you and no one else that you know.
Step2
Write down words that other people would use to describe yourself, and decide whether you find those words to be in line with the way you view yourself. Take inventory of your talents, quirks and shortcomings, and realize that all of these things make you who you are.
Step3
Find a personal style that fits your personality, and encompasses colors and textures that you find appealing, not simply because they are trendy. Work on expressing yourself more. Try poetry, art, writing a song, playing an instrument or any other activities you find enjoyable.
Step4
Speak up more when you disagree about something. Feel free to express your concerns in a group or around your peers, coworkers or friends. It will help you develop a more distinctive and identifiable personality.
Step5
Express yourself through your decor at your home or in your living space. Choose music that conveys your inner self and that you connect with on a personal level. It will help you access a sense of creativity and possibly inspire you to be more comfortable setting yourself apart from the pack.

Tips & Warnings

  • Blogs, livejournal and Myspace are great ways to express your individuality online.
  • Foster relationships that reinforce your sense of self and make you feel good about your innate qualities that express your innermost self.
  • Do not be afraid to express your likes and dislikes.
  • Do not go along with the crowd just because it's the thing to do or because "everyone is doing it." It is a poor way to express individuality and removes a sense of personal power from you.
