How to Convince a Customer of Good Babysitting Qualifications
Many teenagers start their work career as babysitters. They can start as young as 10, depending on the maturity of the child. Boys are also doing babysitting these days, but they usually start a little later since they tend to mature later than girls. The problem with trying to start a babysitting career is that you need to convince that first customer that you have good babysitting qualifications.

Help with a new baby in your own family or care for younger siblings. This should help later when you want to baby sit for other children.

Start with a neighbor who just had a baby. If you are close to them, ask if you can observe and learn how to care for the baby without pay or as a mother's helper with pay. Whether you are paid or not, the biggest thing is that they give you a reference in the future when you start babysitting for money.

Look after other children in the neighborhood at your own home when there is an adult present. Make sure you let the parents of the children know you are the one that is responsible for the children. If you have a problem, there is an adult there for you to turn to.

Set up a network with some of your friends that are interested in babysitting, too. Make sure they are qualified. Take them with you on some of your jobs so the children and parents can get to know them. The nice thing with having a network is, if you are busy, you can recommend one of them--this way people know they will always get a reliable babysitter when they call you.

Get references from everyone. This way, when you have new people call you, you can refer them to someone you have babysat for. After a while, this won't be necessary because people will get your name from other people who you have done babysitting for.

As a sitter for the past 10 years, I think it's poor advice to tell someone looking to become a reputable sitter to bring their friends with them to a babysitting job. I understand why you gave that advice, and I see it's with good intent, but the last thing a family wants to see is that a sitter is bringing their friend along, innocent as it sounds. Just my 2 cents :S.
