How to Convert MKV to AVI Format

The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open-source format that wraps video, audio and text tracks into a single package. Matroska video files, or MKVs, are becoming popular with consumers looking to store TV shows and movies in compressed format. Unfortunately, many programs don't recognize them, so you might have to convert your MKV into an AVI for it to play correctly in your video software.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Download and install the MKV-to-AVI Converter. It's free to try, but you'll have to pay for it if you want to output video files that are more than one minute long.
Step2
Run the converter by double-clicking its desktop icon or by clicking its shortcut in the "Programs" folder of the Start Menu.
Step3
Click the folder labeled "Open Video," and search your computer for the MKV file you wish to convert. It should be easy to find, because the converter won't recognize any other video file formats during this search.
Step4
Open the "Options" menu before converting the file. This allows you to adjust the video properties and output destination of the final AVI file.
Step5
Convert the MKV file to AVI format when you're ready by clicking on the "Convert" button in between the "Options" and "Help" buttons.
Step6
Locate the output file on your hard drive. If you can't find it, perform a search for AVI files using Windows Search.
Step7
Play the AVI file using Windows Media Player or another video player to verify the conversion results. Make sure the video's length and quality are the same as that of the original MKV clip.
