There are multiple methods used to convert a standard toilet to a low-flow toilet. You can install an adjustable flapper to control the amount of water used or add a toilet bag or bottled water to the tank reservoir to create negative space. Easy to do and inexpensive, making your toilet low-flow saves money and water.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toilet flapper
  • Toilet bag
  • Bottled water
  1. Step 1

Install an adjustable toilet flapper. Adjust it to lower the amount of water used to fill the reserve tank. Continue to adjust downward until you achieve the balance of using only as much water as you need to flush the toilet clean.

  2. Step 2

Pick up a toilet bag. This is a bag you fill with water and hang inside the reserve tank. This fills negative space and tricks the toilet into believing it's full and shutting off sooner.

  3. Step 3

Fill two plastic bottles with water and secure the lids tightly. Flush the toilet to empty the reserve tank and place the water bottles inside so that they don't interfere with the flapper or handle. Adjust the size of your water bottles if the toilet is not flushing enough water to clean itself. Use smaller bottles, or use one bottle rather than two.

  4. Step 4

Examine the toilet to make sure there are no leaks. Leaking water is the biggest waste of water with regard to toilets. If you find one and fix it, you'll immediately have a lower-flow toilet
