Changing the oil in a MerCruiser is easy and only requires a few tools. A MerCruiser must have its oil changed every year, or every 100 hours of use, whichever occurs first. Make sure to have the owner's manual on hand and follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Owner's manual
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Bucket or tub
  • New oil filter
  • Oil
  • Rags
  • Water supply to motor
  • Soap and water
  • Gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Oil hand pump
  • O-ring
  1. Step 1

Make sure the engine has a water supply before changing the oil. The motor must be turned off during the oil change.

  2. Step 2

Use the wrench to remove the old filter. Make sure the old o-ring has been removed as well. The o-ring will need to be replaced. Take off the dipstick and thread the oil hand pump onto the end of the dipstick tube. Suck out the oil into a container. A small hand pump can be used to take out the oil.

  3. Step 3

Smear some oil around the top of the new oil filter and the new o-ring. This will help create a vacuum, making the filter stay in place better. Put the new filter on, tightening by hand. Use the wrench to tighten it an additional 3/4 turn. Never overtighten an oil filter.

  4. Step 4

Add oil to the engine. V4 engines require four to five quarts of oil, while V6 and V8 engines require 5 quarts. Big block V8s can use up to 7 quarts of oil. Let the motor sit for 5 minutes to allow the oil to settle all the way into the oil pan. Put the dipstick back on the dipstick tube.

  5. Step 5

Turn on the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature. Turn off the engine and let it sit for 5 minutes. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level to make sure enough oil was added. If not, add more. Use the rags to clean up any mess that was made.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use gloves and protective eyewear. Have a fire extinguisher near, just in case.
  • Take care when working around warm engines. There can be hot spots that can cause severe burns.
