How to Change the Audio Output of a PC

Computers today have many audio output options. Depending on the operating system and sound preferences, a PC can offer a wide range of listening choices. Read the steps below to better understand how to change the audio output of a PC.

1. Turn on the PC and open the Device Manager in the Control Panel of a Windows PC. Look in the drop-down menu for audio devices and identify the device controlling the audio components.
2. Adjust the sound controls either by moving the volume slider up or down or manipulating the volume control knob on the speakers.
3. Manipulate the sound control sliders in the Sound Mixer panel. Open this panel by mousing over the speaker icon in the toolbar and choosing "Sound Mixer." This option allows the user to adjust sound per application.
4. Install a new sound card within the PC and run the speaker connections through this card. Open any software provided with the new sound card for operating instructions. De-select the on-board sound driver or controller for the new driver and audio output device to function properly.
5. Change the audio input cables to shift the speaker assignment without moving the speakers. Simply plugging in the assigned cable to a differing output line can reassign non-dedicated or omni-directional speakers.

Tips & Warnings

• Use a pair of high quality headphones and instruct the PC to use that sound matrix when using the headphones.
• Install a sound mixing program to manipulate the audio output. These programs allow the PC user to adjust the sound matrix on any audio output using an equalizer.
