How to Change a Fraction Into a Decimal

Math is the methodology of numbers, symbols and measurements using defined properties and relationships to sets and quantities to attain the unsolved or desired results. Math is incorporated into day to day living. Math is used constantly in shopping, traveling, banking and entertaining. Follow these steps to perform a useful mathematical operation-changing a fraction into a decimal.

1. Define fraction. A fraction is any number that is part of a whole, group or component. One-third of a pie was eaten. This means that if the pie was divided into three equal parts that only one of the three pieces has been eaten.

2. Understand decimals. Decimals are numbers based on ten. This numerical system is also called base 10 or the Hindu-Arabic System of numbers. The value of a number or set or numbers is increased or decreased by the decimal placement. 1.0 = one; .1 = one-tenth.

3. Change a fraction to decimal. In the simplest term, divide the numerator by the denominator. The numerator is the number above a fraction line. The denominator is the number below the fraction line. In the fraction 2/100, two is the numerator and 100 is the denominator.

4. Identify recurring numbers. Recurring numbers occur when the answer to the equation is infinite. A classic example of a recurring number is changing 1/3 to a decimal. The answer 0.3333333.....goes on and on. The ..... following a decimal indicates infinite or never ending.
