Collect what you like. Although you can collect to make a profit, you can also collect just for fun. You may want to "specialize" by focusing on one particular theme or location or you may just want to buy postcards that you like. For some people, used postcards offer a glimpse of life in another time and place.

Look for postcards in good condition. Unused postcards with no signs of wear are generally worth more than used postcards. If you don't mind used postcards, consider those that have interesting stamps or have interesting, readable notes.

    • 3

Keep an eye out for rarer postcard types. Halloween postcards can be difficult to find so if you do, they can be a good investment or a unique part of your collection.

    • 4

Watch for publisher marks for John Winsch or International Art Publishing. You can also keep an eye out for postcard artists like Ellen Clappsaddle, Louis Wain, Frances Brundage and Samuel Schmuker. A book on vintage postcards can help you identify the artists and publishers to watch for.

    • 5

Search for postcards in antique stores, estate sales, online auctions and through collectors. Vintage postcards can show up in a variety of places so it pays to keep your eyes open. If you're searching for a particular theme or type of postcard, a dealer or online auction may be a better option than hunting through stacks of postcards in an antique store (although you never know what you'll find).

    • 6

Protect the postcards that you buy by using archival quality holders or albums. This not only helps you store the postcards, but you'll protect them from damage. Keep the postcards in a cool location with a medium humidity level.
