Catfish offer a fun fight and are a tasty reward for all of the hard work. Sunfish serve as great bait fish but are pests when you're trying to catch catfish. Use the following tips for a better catfish fishing experience when faced with an overstock of sunfish.

  • 10-lb. line
  • Chicken livers or shrimp

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a fishing tackle box with catfish bait, such as dried chicken livers or medium shrimp. These are successful catfish baits that sunfish tend to avoid.

    • 2

Keep the tackle hardware simple. Take a six-foot pole rigged with a 10-lb. line to catch catfish. Concentrate on a sharp hook as opposed to an overpriced fishing rod. Buy good quality hooks like Gamakatsu.

    • 3

Use a heavy test line to spook away sunfish. Sunfish are easily scared by strange things in the water, and fishing line heavier than 4 lb. will catch their eye and move them away from the bottom where catfish feed and nest.

    • 4

Cast into areas of shallow water, as sunfish prefer darker, deeper areas. Fish for catfish on cloudy and cool days, as sunfish become very active on warm days with warm water.

    • 5

Move away from flat or grassy areas to catch catfish in waters overstocked with sunfish. Sunfish will school in these areas and wait for food.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie fresh chicken livers inside a small amount of pantyhose. Tie off and rig with a treble hook for good results.

  • Slowly drag the bait and hook along the bottom of the lake. This will attract the catfish, yet sunfish will not strike it.

  • Use caution when working with sharp hooks or knives.
