How to Catch a Rock Bass

Rock bass is a member of the sunfish family. It isn't really a bass but closely resembles one and likes a rocky habitat. You can find these fish in all the Great Lakes and they are most active in the spring and summer months. These fish are fun to catch but aren't well known for their flavor. Follow these steps to learn how to catch a rock bass.

Instructions

    • 1

Fish in the early morning or late evening. Rock bass don't venture out when the sun is directly overhead.

    • 2

Look for submerged trees, brush and rocks. Rock bass hide from predators in these areas and use it for cover when they are looking for prey.

    • 3

Catch a rock bass using live bait. They prefer minnows, craws and water-dogs. Fish from the shore and use a bobber.

    • 4

Go fly fishing in the morning during the early spring and summer months. Use soft-body frog-fish or deer hair bugs when the rock bass are hitting top water. If they aren't coming to the top try crayfish or nymphs.

    • 5

Watch for boils when fishing for rock bass. If you see an eruption of minnows under the water or even jumping out, chances are that rock bass are present. Cast a spoon through the boil of minnows and jerk it back.

    • 6

Try different depths of the lake. Rock bass that you can likely catch will be hiding under the rocks or lingering close to the bottom of the lake bed.
