How to Carve a Watermelon to Celebrate an Event

Fruit carving is an art that takes many years to perfect. Watermelon is the most popular of all fruits to learn on because it's easy to carve. A carving knife, which has one sharp blade, should be used. They are sold at most arts and crafts stores. Read on to learn how to turn a watermelon into a colorful decoration.

Instructions

1. Decide what shape you want to carve to celebrate your event. Common watermelon carvings are fruit baskets, baby strollers, pirate ships, bugs and fish. Choose a watermelon that is most appropriately shaped for the item you want to make.

2. Draw the object lightly on the watermelon using a non-toxic water soluble fine-point marker.

3. Lay a thick absorbent towel on the table or counter top that you are working on. Place your watermelon on the towel. The towel holds the watermelon in place while you work and absorbs the juices that come out while you carve.

4. Take your carving knife and carefully cut the watermelon along the lines. Remove any pieces that you are not using and set aside.

5. Scoop the watermelon out of the middle of your carving using a melon baller. Put the melon balls into a covered container in the refrigerator to be put back inside the shell for serving. Then use a long-handled metal spoon to scrape the inside of the rind and remove any melon left inside.

6. Scallop, zig zag or otherwise detail the edges of your carving with your knife if you wish. Use a vegetable peeler to smooth, round off or finish edges.

7. Store in the refrigerator until use. Fill your carving with the watermelon balls and an assortment of other fresh fruit for a festive fruit salad for any event.

Tips & Warnings

• It is best if you can do your carving the day of your event so it is nice and fresh. It can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days if need be. If it is stored before use, move the leftover fruit salad to another container when the party is over and throw away your carving.
