A great way to liven up any pool party is to have a tiki mask on display. Unfortunately, these usually are not easy to come by. Luckily, watermelons are readily available and, when carved, make great tiki mask decorations.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Oblong watermelon
  • Pencil
  • Paring knife
  • Large spoon
  • Melon baller
  1. Step 1

Choose an appropriate watermelon. An oblong-shaped one works best for the tiki mask shape. Clean the watermelon to get off any dirt or impurities.

  2. Step 2

Create a base for the watermelon by cutting off approximately 1/4 inch from one of the ends.

  3. Step 3

Draw a face on the watermelon. Use a pencil with an eraser to correct any mistakes made.

  4. Step 4

Make the nostrils using a melon baller. Clean up any imperfections in the nostrils using a small knife.

  5. Step 5

Cut out the mouth using a small paring knife. Be sure to leave behind room for the tiki mask's teeth. Then cut the teeth, leaving small spaces in between each tooth.

  6. Step 6

Carve the flesh out of the mouth using a spoon and the paring knife. Next, carve out the eyes using the paring knife and a spoon.

  7. Step 7

Decorate the watermelon tiki mask by carving channels in the watermelon skin or by carving a bone from the leftover watermelon pieces. Attach the bone with a toothpick.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always exercise caution when using a paring knife or a melon baller, as they can be very sharp.
