Step 1
Know that dressing modestly starts with dressing neatly. Clothes should be in good condition, with no rips or tears.
-
Step 2
Look for a blouse that has a higher neckline and at least three quarter length sleeves. It should also be long enough at the bottom so it will keep you covered if you should you bend over or reach your arms over your head.
-
Step 3
Check that your blouse's buttons don't gap so that you can see inside your shirt. Similarly, you don't want your shirt to be revealing should you bend forward. Layers are a good option to insure modesty when wearing a loose fitting shirt. Something with a low v-neck that shows off your cleavage will not be acceptable in a Mormon church.
-
Step 4
Find a long skirt or dress, preferably past your knees. You want to avoid any revealing slits in the skirt. Shoes should be closed toe, with a low heel.
-
Step 5
Dress in looser fitting clothes, as something form fitting isn't considered modest. A tight fitting sweater, for example, wouldn't be a wise choice. Stay away from clothing that is see-through in any way.
-
Step 6
Style your hair neatly but so as not to draw too much attention. If you hair is long, you might consider wearing it in a bun.

on 7/3/2009 I agree with the 3 women who commented below. If one of my friends was coming to church with me and she asked me what to wear, i would sum it up with "no cleavage, no short skirts." You could add "no thong sticking out" "no belly shirts" and "no pink spiked hair" but honestly, I'm pretty sure she would know not to have her thong show and have a green mohawk. So if you're going to church with a mormon friend or if you just want to check it out, your normal clothes should be just about fine (think of what would be appropriate for a job-interview).

on 4/5/2009 I agree with the first comment! I am a teenaged member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My hair is about medium length and there are many girls in my ward that have long hair and short hair and none of us have to wear it in a bun. We wear our hair pretty much however we want it. We just ask that the extreme cuts or colors be avoided. The sleeves do not have to be 3/4. I wear mostly short sleeves. It is true that you dont want anything to tight or revealing. The clothing doesnt have to be "loose" fitting. But do make sure that it isnt too tight that you can see every curve in your body. It is also true that your skirt or dress should be either at knee length or longer. I think this was a productive article, but a little out dated and also a little to strict. Anyone is welcome in our church, we just ask for these guidlines to be followed. We will not turn any

on 8/7/2008 wow...I've been attentding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 42 years and haven't heard of some of the restictions posted here. The long hair and 3/4 length sleeves and only closed toe shoes with a low heel. That is hilarious. First and formost I will tell you ANYONE is welcome to visit and need not think they would be judged. The Savior would never turn anyone away and nor would we. To dress modestly sets a tone that is respectful and brings a spirit to the meeting that is desirable. However, the message that far out ways what you look like is that you feel welcome.

on 6/2/2008 The "how to" article above is MOSTLY correct.
Looking at #2 above, it says that girls should look for blouses that have at least 3/4 length sleeves. Although this is a fine idea, it's not necessary. Girls today are fine if they have short sleeved blouses, or even blouses with "cap sleeves". The only thing that is not appropriate is a "tank top" style blouse, or sleeveless, or something with a speghetti strap. As long as the shoulder and the top inch or two of her arm is covered, all should be well.
Looking at #6, concering long hair. This statement is soooo outdated! Girls can have long hair, short hair, they can wear pig tails, pony tails, loose and straight or short and curly. Girls can style their hair any way that they want to. All that is requested is that the hair style not be outrageous and this goes for both boys and girls.
