People have been growing their hair in dreadlocks for centuries, and in recent years, dreadlocks have again become very popular. Once the dreads are locked in place, keeping your hair in dreadlocks is a simple process.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo
  • Rat-tail comb
  • Hair-safe elastic bands
  • Metal comb
  • Dental flosser or a small crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Shampoo the hair and allow it to air dry naturally or blow-dry it.

  2. Step 2

Use the rat-tail comb to section your hair into sections approximately one inch in diameter. You can section the hair in a random pattern, or in an organized grid pattern.

  3. Step 3

Remove the elastic bands and tightly braid each section to the ends of the hair. It's best to complete the sections on the back of the head and then move on to other sections. Replace the elastic bands at the root of the braid and at the ends. Continue until the entire head has been braided.

  4. Step 4

Leave the braids in for about two weeks. Wash your hair often during that time but don't condition it.

  5. Step 5

Remove the elastic bands from the braids. Twist a section of hair, backcombing it with the metal comb as you go, until the hair is big and fluffy. Backcomb the entire section again until you have a tight dreadlock. Tighten the dreadlock at the roots by rubbing the section of hair with the palm of your hand, working in a clockwise motion. Re-attach the elastic bands loosely at the root and the end.

  6. Step 6

Weave in any loose hairs with a dental flosser or a small crochet hook.
