Drawing is a fun and exciting way to express yourself. Many people draw a wide array of things from fictional characters to portraits to skyscrapers. However, drawing realistically can be a difficult task if you are not working with some basic information beforehand to help in your endeavor. Follow some steps to help you draw realistically and make your drawings look lifelike.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Eraser

Step1
Determine what you want to draw. Look around the room you are in and focus on something you can see very clearly and visualize in your head what it would look like to draw that item on paper.
Step2
Gather together some basic drawing supplies, such as a sketch pad, pencils, pens, and erasers. Also review some basic drawing information on perspective and sketching before you begin. Prepare your drawing area and situate yourself where you can easily see the item you are attempting to draw.
Step3
Draw the item freehand simply using your current skills to render the item as realistically as possible. Forget about shading and details at the moment simply try and capture the essence of the item by drawing its position and overall shape.
Step4
Pay special attention to how the light shines on the object. Notice any shadows that are cast on the object, strange positions that effect your vantage point and dimensions after you have drawn the basic outline. Shade the object to give it depth and notice the variability in darkness by each shaded area. Refer to drawing books for more information on the grayscale variability.
Step5
Add any details on the object after you have shaded the object to the best of your ability. Use your eraser to eliminate hard outlines and to lighten colors of shading.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use geometric equipment such as a protractor or a ruler to create straight lines on objects that are geometric in character.
  • When drawing faces realistically, take a good look at the proportions of the face. Work on drawing each feature separately before sketching the head.
  • Take a picture of the item you wish to draw and use it as your reference point for drawing.
