How to Duplicate MP3 Files on iTunes

When you want to play with your MP3 files, whether it is changing the sound with an equalizer or changing the art or album information, you should always preserve a copy of the original in case of disaster. Do this in iTunes by making a backup of your playlist that will have a copy of the original file within it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a new folder on your desktop. This will serve as a workspace for the files that you want to preserve. You will be storing the originals in this folder during the process.

  2. Step 2

Open a new playlist for iTunes. Populate it with the songs that you want to duplicate. Use the Drag-n-Drop feature of iTunes to copy the songs from the new playlist to the folder on your desktop that you created in Step 1. Make sure you see a small "+" sign on the cursor. This indicates that the file is actually copying.

  3. Step 3

Change the files on the playlist in whatever manner you would like and then import the files that are in the folder on the desktop. When the files are imported, they will be identical to the originals that you saved including the ID3 tags.

  4. Step 4

Check the playlist to make sure there are two copies of the same song. One of them should be identical to the first file and the second with the changes that you made.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't make any changes to the file that you exported to the file folder, you will not be able to import it into iTunes. It recognizes identical files and allows only one instance of it in the playlist. You must make at least a small change in file, even as small as adding COPY to the file name.
