How to Build a Cave-Like Fort

There is nothing like a cave-like fort to provide a peaceful, quiet place. A fort can be a good place to read a book, write a letter or sit quietly with your thoughts. Forts can be fun when you are playing alone or you invite in a friend to play.

Instructions

    • 1

Find pieces of furniture in your house that are as tall as you would like your fort to be. If you are using heavy furniture that is hard to move, build your fort wherever the furniture is. If you make a shorter fort using chairs, you can probably move them to where you would like your fort to be.

    • 2

Build your fort against a wall or better yet in the corner of a room if possible. This cuts down on the amount of furniture and blankets you need.

    • 3

Drape large blankets, sheets or other large pieces of material over the furniture. If the furniture is not solid, be sure the blankets come all the way down to the ground to make your fort dark inside like a cave.

    • 4

Continue adding blankets until your fort is completely enclosed, leaving one small opening at the front for entering, like the mouth of a cave.

    • 5

Put a small blanket or a towel over the door to your fort if you want it completely closed, but make sure you leave it hanging loose at the bottom so you can lift it easily to enter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Darker colored blankets make it darker inside your cave fort.

  • Bring a flashlight inside your fort so you can see, especially if you plan on reading in there.

  • Put some pillows and blankets inside your fort to make it comfortable inside.
