How to Brag Without Being Arrogant

Bragging helps people share their accomplishments or the accomplishments of their family, with other people. However, without consideration for others feelings, bragging comes across as arrogant and rude. It's important that you hone your bragging skills, so you can talk about your accomplishments without making people dislike you.

Instructions

    • 1

Smile or laugh when you talk about your accomplishments. Your facial expressions enhance what you're telling people, and if you have a smug, superior look on your face, you'll unintentionally come off as arrogant.

    • 2

Make your bragging part of a group discussion. Conversations about cars, kids, colleges or jobs are the best time to tell everyone about your new car, your Ph.D., making partner at your law firm or your kid's acceptance to college.

    • 3

Talk about the hard work you've done that's helped you achieve your goals. People dislike hearing you brag about something that was handed to you, such as an inheritance or the vice presidency of your father's company. People appreciate your accomplishments more and find you less arrogant if they know you worked hard.

    • 4

Give tips when you brag about something someone else is struggling with, like weight loss or college classes. Share the things that helped you lose thirty pounds or earn an "A" in all your undergrad classes, rather than bragging about your accomplishments and making the other person feel bad.

    • 5

Ask about the other person's children, job, marriage or new house when you brag. This helps your bragging seem more like a conversation and doesn't come off as arrogant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't tell people how much you make a year or how much you paid for something. People can tell by looking at you that you dress well, drive an expensive car and can afford expensive things.
