Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find information on various schools where you can learn the art of film editing. Look online to narrow down pertinent choices that will work for you both financially and your personal situation.

  2. Step 2

Research all of the basic film-editing rules and terms such as cutting, dissolving, jump cut and fade in or out. Get a personal camera that you can use to film your own films in order to become acquainted with the filming process.

  3. Step 3

Look for internships at film studios or television stations in your area. Begin working anywhere you can to get a foot in the door; remember that no job is too small starting out in the industry.

  4. Step 4

Work your way up at a studio to the projection room or even sound editing if you have the proper training in those areas. Complete formal training or apprenticeship in the industry. Join a union such as the Motion Picture and Videotape Editors Guild of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

  5. Step 5

Think about relocation if you cannot find a job in your area. L.A. and New York are the most profitable film industry regions. Keep an active portfolio of your work, including work from your education, your internship and work positions.
