The flying headbutt, sometimes called the diving headbutt, is a death-defying professional wrestling move innovated (inadvertently) by Harley Race. Since Race first did the move, it's become a staple of aerial wrestling moves and has been taken up by top wrestlers.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start learning the flying headbutt from the ground by jumping forward (without an opponent in the ring) into a swan-dive position. Land with the force of your weight on your chest, outstretched arms and thighs. Pay attention to keeping your legs straight behind you so you don't "scorpion" or allow your legs to raise over your head.

  2. Step 2

Practice climbing up on the turnbuckle (wrestling ring ropes) or up to a raised platform that will give your flying headbutt a little more flight. Jump with your arms at your side and raise them up and over your head as you leap so you can help yourself get up and out away from your launch pad. Jump on to soft gym pads.

  3. Step 3

Commit to the landing by extending your body fully, bracing your abs and resisting the impulse to turn to your side or put your arm in front of your face, which are all things that result in broken bones.

  4. Step 4

Place a wrestling opponent or practice buddy flat on the ground beneath and slightly away from your launch pad. Practice doing the flying headbutt from the ground so you can target your landing so that your head hit the pad between your opponent's head and shoulder.

  5. Step 5

Attempt to do the flying headbutt with an opponent from the turnbuckle only once you have become adept at correctly landing the move (without letting your head make any contact with your opponent's) from moderate heights.

Tips & Warnings
  • Professional wrestlers, including Harley Race who invented the move, have reported spine and brain problems from performing the flying headbutt from serious heights, so start at a very moderate height to stay safe.
