How to Crash Land a Remote-Controlled Plane

Flying remote-controlled or RC
planes is a growing hobby among flying enthusiasts. Improvements in technology make exciting RC planes available in all price ranges. Crash landings are part of the pain and fun of flying RC planes. Attempt to bring your plane down in one piece but remember to put safety first.

Instructions

    • 1

Land an RC plane in an emergency in the same way you land in non-emergency situations. Turn your plane into the wind and shut down the motor. Crosswind landings are acceptable. Use your rudder to keep your flight path straight and allow the plane to gently glide to the ground. Use your engine to gently affect your plane's rate of decent if desired. Pull back on the control stick or flare, immediately before landing so the plane lands with its nose in the air.

    • 2

Look out for power lines, cars, people and other RC planes when you make an unscheduled landing. Use what control you have of the plane to prevent injuries to others or their property. Crashes are part of the RC hobby.

    • 3

Purchase an RC plane especially made to withstand multiple crash landings if you are new to the hobby or are practicing new skills. Crash-resistant planes are available from your local or online RC plane retailer.

    • 4

Keep your batteries fully charged. Be aware of power limitations while flying. Land your RC plane immediately if you are in danger of even one battery dying.

    • 5

Write your name and phone number on your remote-controlled airplane in case it lands in a remote location. Check your messages to see if a concerned citizen finds your plane and contacts you.
