Students must pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) exam to graduate from high school in Massachusetts. Success on this high-stakes test requires careful student preparation and adequate support from teachers and parents. Here's how to do well on the MCAS and open the door to your future.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Take your classes seriously. The best MCAS preparation is a firm foundation of English and mathematics. Pay attention in class, ask questions as they come up and complete all homework.
Step2
Understand what the MCAS covers. The exam consists of Math, Language Arts, Science and Technology, and Social Science and History questions.
Step3
Become familiar with the exam's format. The MCAS consists of multiple choice questions, short answer and open response questions, and writing prompts that students must respond to with an English composition.
Step4
Enroll in a prep course. Instructors help students by offering test-taking strategies, intensive review and useful materials like sample questions and practice tests to help them do well on the MCAS.
Step5
Practice every day. Before sitting for the MCAS, take all practice tests available to you. Review tests to determine weaknesses, focusing on those areas in future study.
Step6
Improve your writing skills. You must be able to effectively respond to a writing prompt, demonstrating your ability to develop a thesis, organize and focus your thoughts and use the English language properly.
Step7
Get plenty of rest the night before the MCAS. Do something to unwind, eat a mild dinner and go to sleep early. Eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the exam to increase your energy level and focus.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some students with disabilities or limited English proficiency qualify for special test-taking circumstances. Speak with a school official for specific information regarding your special needs.
  • During the test, carefully read all questions before answering and review all answers before handing in your test. Check and recheck all work. You're more likely to do well if you eliminate careless mistakes.
