Preppy and punk are two contrasting styles that consist of different vocabulary, fashion and mannerisms. Preppy styles tend to be seen as a sign of wealth and conformity, while punk is associated with rebellion and leans more toward a darker lifestyle.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Throw out all of the preppy khakis, knit polos and ribbons for ponytails. The fresh-scrubbed, wholesome preppy must go.

  2. Step 2

Go shopping. You need new clothes, music, reading material on the punk lifestyle, and tickets to a punk concert.

  3. Step 3

Dress up in new punk clothes that consist of lots of black, striped stockings, short skirts or baggy black pants with chained belts, and black shoes with tall wedges.

  4. Step 4

Create a punk hairstyle and apply punk make-up. Punk make-up is very dramatic with emphasis on the eyes. Hair is usually short and choppy with streaks of bright colors like red, pink and blue.

  5. Step 5

Consider getting piercings and tattoos. Many punk chicks have tattoos and body piercings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Punk clothing can be inexpensive. Great places to shop are yard sales, a local Goodwill or Salvation Army. The more creative and shocking your fashion, the more your new look will create stares and scream non-conformity.
  • Before you get any piercings or tattoos, keep in mind all precautions, age limitations and laws pertaining to them.
