How to Buy Home Grown Tobacco

Many farmers and backyard garden enthusiasts grow their own tobacco. Although mostly for personal use, occasionally you can find home grown tobacco for sale. Use caution when purchasing home grown tobacco and follow all state regulations. Selling home grown tobacco is illegal in some states, so do your homework before making a purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what kind of tobacco you are looking for. Pipe smokers might be especially interested in homegrown tobacco since much of the chemicals used in commercial grades are left out.

    • 2

Talk to people in the tobacco market that can help you make connections.

    • 3

Look for tobacco farmers in your area that might offer their product for sale to a few individuals. Most large tobacco farmers are members of a coop and will not have home grown tobacco for sale locally.

    • 4

Make sure you know the tobacco grower well before you purchase any tobacco from him. You want to make sure that the homegrown tobacco you purchase is not mixed with any other substance that could be considered illegal.

    • 5

Determine a fair price between you and the grower. Most home grown tobacco growers will have a set price based on market value, grade and type. If a tobacco grower doesn't know his market and the quality of his product do not purchase from that grower.

    • 6

Make purchases in small amounts to test the product before purchasing again from the same grower. You don't want to get stuck with a large batch of bad tobacco.

Tips & Warnings

  • Selling tobacco to minors is illegal in most states. This includes homegrown products. The buying and selling of tobacco products from local growers should be done with great care and within the bounds of the law.
