How to Avoid Becoming a Religious Zealot
Religious zealots tend to turn other people off instead of attracting them to their religion. You can avoid becoming a religious zealot by changing your attitude and perspective. Do things because your heart's right instead of because they appear to be right or are a part of the religious structure you're involved in. Find out what lesson is behind the commandment or tradition first.

1
Listen to other people's opinions with an open mind. Approach each conversation as an opportunity to learn, not convert. Share your opinions only when asked, rather than refuting and proselytizing. People tend to respect those who are slow to speak because when they do, it's more likely to be something well thought-out and important.
-
2
Love the people around you despite their choices, beliefs and attitudes that offend or upset you. Consider your own life and the process it took to get you to where you are and whether you've actually arrived at your goal yet. Stop judging others and adopt a spirit of love toward everyone; accept them for their intrinsic value as human beings who are created equal with you.
-
3
Stop performing religious acts if you don't understand the significance behind them. Make your religious choice a conscious choice. Make sure your attitude matches the reason for your actions. For example, if you give to the poor, don't do it to look good to others or even because it's part of your religious practice. Give because it's a concern of your heart to look after others in need.

Great metaphor, gailmc. Indeed, a person of any religion can "explode all over people leaving nothing but shrapnel." That's effective imagery, and something I have experienced. There are plenty of kind, loving, accepting Christians in the world, but it is those few "cannonballs" that make it hard for people to accept a belief in God that makes sense to them. -

Thank you. There is nothing worse than a Christian who is a cannonball in the name of Jesus Christ. Such a Christian explodes all over people leaving nothing but shrapnel. Jesus Christ spoke the Truth boldly and with invitation. His love was a violent love because it called for complete transformation of human carnal nature. Still He let people choose because that is the nature of free will. A Zealot condemns with a critical attitude; without humility is is dangerous. -
