The best way to break in a new instrument is simply to play it. There are also a few things you can do for different instruments to make sure that they are used and cared for properly. This awareness of how you use your instrument will ensure that it lasts for a long time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Care for your instrument before you start playing. The first thing you will need to do for any instrument is to make sure that the instrument is in tune.

  2. Step 2

Oil your woodwind or brass instruments. Always make sure that you use the correct oils for your instrument. If you have an instrument with a reed, make sure that the reed is in good shape and is properly prepped before you begin playing.

  3. Step 3

Rosin new bows for stringed instruments heavily the first time they are used and rosined again each time they are used. This will improve the overall sound of the instrument and protect the hair of the bow.

  4. Step 4

Make sure that the strings, pegs, bridge, and tailpiece are all properly positioned and tuned.

  5. Step 5

Pay attention to the instrument while you are playing. As you play and the instrument warms up, it may go out of tune. Stop and re-tune when this happens. Make sure to make any changes that you need while you are playing.

  6. Step 6

Clean the instrument before you put it away. This means re-oiling the instrument and cleaning the inside of the instrument with a cloth for woodwind and brass instruments. Stringed instruments should be wiped clean of rosin since the rosin will eat into the finish of the instrument if left on. Also loosen tension on the bow.
