How to Break Bricks

If you have ever marveled at a person's ability to break bricks in Karate, using his hand without getting injured and want to attempt the feat yourself, follow these steps to learn how to do it. With proper training and supervision, you can surprise your friends with your incredible strength.

  1. Step 1

    Understand the physics and physiology behind the ability to break bricks. The momentum of a person's hand coming down on the bricks is what breaks them, so the more momentum driving the hand, the easier it is to break the bricks. Additionally, the small bone on the palm of the hand, directly under the fifth digit, can withstand 40 times the amount of stress than can a brick. If applied correctly, the force from the hand can break the bricks easily.

  2. Step 2

    Place the brick on a flat and stable surface. The more stable the surface, the less "give" the brick will have to prevent you from breaking it. Cover the brick with a thin towel so the shards can't hurt you or your spectators.

  3. Step 3

    Relax your body so that when you do strike the brick, the energy transfers freely from your striking arm to the brick. Aim for the center of the brick with the smallest part of your hand, and concentrate on going through the brick, as opposed to just hitting it.

  • Breaking bricks is a fundamental part of training in Karate that allows you to get used to the impact on your body when you hit a solid object. Likewise, breaking bricks helps to develop accuracy while testing the force of your hit.
