How to Block Annoying Banner Ads

Think of pop-up and banner ads as junk mail. You didn't ask for i, and you don't want it. But still they keep coming. Not only do banner ads annoy Internet users, but they often slow down your browsing time as well. However, there are ways to block annoying banner ads.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Start by going into Internet Explorer, and clicking "Tools." Select "Pop-up Blocker." Click "Turn On."
Step2
Adjust your block settings when you click on "Pop-up Blocker Settings." Determine the filter level you want: low, medium or high.
Step3
Set the type of notification you want when a banner ad pops up, such as a sound or an information bar that runs at the top of your page. If the Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker doesn't sufficiently block banner ads to your satisfaction, try one of the other methods in the remaining steps.
Step4
Edit your host page in a similar way as when you block websites. The host page contains mapping of IP addresses. Run the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\(and so on).
Step5
Locate 127.0.0.1 local host. One the next line ad the next number in the series, 127.0.0.2, and add the name of the server with the banner ads. For example, 127.0.0.2 ad.doubleclick.net.
Step6
Click "Done" to block those banner ads for appearing again. This also blocks the server from tracking your movements.
Step7
Find an easier way to block annoying banner ads by trying out one of the many security programs made especially for that purpose, including SecretMaker, AdsBlock and Ad Annihilator. Tips & Warnings

  • You can also alter the host file to block websites and third party cookies.
  • A large host file over 135 KB can slow down your computer when you use XP or Vista operating systems.
