A school lockdown is done for the safety of everyone in the school. A lockdown means that no one goes in and no one goes out. The key to a successful lockdown is to have everyone work together. Proper behavior is the key to being safe. Follow these steps in order to behave properly when in a situation like this.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Stay calm. Don't run around hysterical. There are many people in a school and each person has to behave accordingly or there will be mass chaos.
Step2
Crouch down in a corner and stay that way until you are told it is safe. "Duck and cover" is a phrase most often used with a lockdown. Hide underneath a table, desk or anywhere that will shelter you.
Step3
Be very quiet. Officials need to hear each other to assess the situation and it doesn't help if there is chatter going on. Try not to laugh, cry, cough or make any other noise.
Step4
Lock any door if you are in a room and don't unlock it until an official tells you to do so. Try to stay away from any windows. Don't look out or open anything. Stay hidden and low to the ground.
Step5
Avoid using your cell phone. You may want to call family members in a time of crisis, but this may clog up the signals for officials trying to keep in communication.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to work together in a lockdown. If someone needs help and it won't put you at risk, offer to help or keep them calm until help arrives.
