How to Become an EMT Explorer

EMT Explorers offer an on-the-job training program geared toward youth ages 14 to 20 who have completed the eighth grade. The program provides classroom training and some ride-alongs that allow youth to see if this is a career they'd like to explore. Explorers is a national program open to all young adults.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local fire department or your local chapter of Boy Scouts to find the program closest to you.

    • 2

Commit yourself to the time it takes to complete such a program. In general, there are strict attendance requirements that must be met throughout a two to five month time period.

    • 3

Review the policies of the program you want to join. Many now have standards of school attendance, minimum grade requirements and pre-course certifications that must be completed, such as CPR training.

    • 4

Ask for a schedule of meetings and locations when you obtain your application. Obtain a list of equipment requirements or uniform information at the same time. Arriving in class fully prepared is the best way to begin.

    • 5

Fill out the application to join your local chapter of EMT Explorers. Return the application or take it with you to the first meeting.

    • 6

Bring your parents or guardian to the first meeting. They will need to sign consent forms prior to your participation in class as well as ride-alongs.

    • 7

Attend the classes and participate fully to achieve the most from the program. EMT Explorers program is an opportunity to achieve personal growth while helping your community.
