There are a number of ways to compress a DVD and back it up onto a Video CD, or VCD for short. One of the best ways is to use a video editing suite like Nero to recode the DVD video files and transfer them to VCD. Although Nero is somewhat expensive, it makes running the backup incredibly easy and offers a variety of useful features for novice and advanced users.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Nero Vision. You can find its shortcut in the "Photo and Video" folder of Nero's main program folder in the Start Menu.

  2. Step 2

Mouse over the "Make CD..." tab on the "What would you like to do?" screen and select "Video CD" from the options.

  3. Step 3

Select the "Import Disc" menu from the list of tabs on the right side of the screen. Then, click on the DVD drive holding the disc you want to back up.

  4. Step 4

Choose the video titles you want to import from the disc. Nero automatically highlights them all, so you don't need to change any settings if you're making a full backup of the DVD. Click "OK."

  5. Step 5

Wait for Nero to encode the selected video titles, then click the "Next" button to make a menu for your VCD.

  6. Step 6

Use the options in the "Edit Menu" template to add or change the menus on your disc. You can change everything from a menu button's appearance to the music it plays in the background with these tools.

  7. Step 7

Preview your project by clicking "Next." Make sure the menus and video titles play properly before continuing to the burning menu.

  8. Step 8

Check to see that your DVD burner is highlighted in the "Current Destination" box, then click "Burn."
