Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Establish the proper volleyball backset position. The player acts as if he is about to sit down in an imaginary chair with the exception that he leans forward as he lowers his body. Also, make sure to spread the hands and bend the knees.
Step2
Anticipate the placement of the volleyball. Try to judge the speed and height of the incoming volleyball in order to complete the backset correctly.
Step3
Notice the position of the teammate that will receive the backset. The backset places the volleyball in ideal hitting position for the teammate. Also, keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of the teammate receiving the backset. For instance, if the player does not jump very high then a lower backset will be appropriate.
Step4
Push the volleyball with your fingers to guide the ball. Keep the palms up and the hands angled slightly backwards. Once the volleyball makes contact with the hands, extend the arms to push the volleyball into the air at a slightly backward angle. The degree of the angle depends on the position of the teammate receiving the backset. Remember the player can't catch the ball so the volleyball must stay in motion.
Step5
Step to the side away from the player whom received the backset. Often this player is coming forward and can collide with the player completing the backset.
