How to Avoid Getting Detention

If you find yourself sitting in detention after school, you may feel it's not fair, or maybe that you're being singled out for punishment. But you do have the ability to avoid getting detention if you try to follow these steps. It will build your character, which will serve you well into your future.

Instructions

    • 1

Know your school's policies. You don't want to find yourself in detention for something you didn't know wasn't allowed in your school. Not knowing the rules won't be an acceptable excuse for not following them.

    • 2

Show the proper respect to your teachers, and don't talk back. You may disagree with them, but if you want to avoid detention sometimes you're going to have to sit back and be quiet. You'll have to do this in life, so it's best to get used to it now.

    • 3

Learn to display kindness to other students as well as to teachers. If you have a reputation for being a nice person, when you do slip up sometime, as we all do, you're much more likely to be given the benefit of the doubt and thereby avoid detention.

    • 4

Walk away from potential fights. Someone may really be pushing your buttons, and it'll take everything you have to walk away. The feeling of satisfaction in controlling your emotions will bring you much more pride in the future than the memory of being in a fight. Think before you act.

    • 5

Be on time. Learning punctuality now will serve you well in your adult years, as well as helping you avoid getting detention now.

    • 6

Serve detention, if you do get it, without making excuses for your mistakes. Look at the experience as a lesson learned, and make a promise to do better in the future.
